Description

  • a spiny shrub growing to around 2m
  • ovateegg-shaped, narrow at base, leathery leaves, glossy dark green above, lighter below
  • the white flowers have five petals with a jasmine like scent
  • the small oval fruit turn from green to orange/red when ripe

preparation

  1. pick the ripe fruit when it has turned orange or red
  2. the texture is like an apricot and the taste strawberry-like
  3. the fruit can be eaten raw or cooked

The shrub is native to coastal,  tropical and southern Africa.

In Cyprus it’s planted by municipalities along roadsides and in public parks.

As an ornamental evergreen shrub or small tree it is suited to the Cyprus climate being resistant to drought, fire, salt and even air pollution.
