Description

  • alternate leaflets arranged alternately or odd-pinnate leaflets in rows, one at tip leaves. Leaflets are ovate egg-shaped, narrow at base or elliptic oval-shaped, small or no point, with a smooth, sinuate with wave-like indentations-serrate teeth forward-pointing or sinuate with wave-like indentations-crenate with rounded teeth margin
  • the leaves are dark green colour with a lighter stem that is hollow
  • grows in damp places, shaded valleys and near streams and rivers

preparation

  1. pick tender stems and leaves for salads
  2. has a peppery flavour
  3. can be cooked for soup

extra info

Caution when foraging watercress from streams and rivers. Watercress grown in the presence of manure or sewage can be an environment for parasites such as giardia or liver fluke, Fasciola hepatica.
