Description

  • an evergreen tree that grows up to 15m
  • the bark, leaves and berries have a peppery aroma when crushed
  • usually odd-pinnate leaflets in rows, one at tip or sometimes even-pinnate leaflets in rows, two at tip leaves
  • small white flowers
  • 5–7mm diameter spherical fruit in dense clusters turn from green to pink or purple

preparation

  1. collect the ‘peppercorns’ when they have turned from green to pink, red or purple
  2. a slightly milder flavour than black pepper
  3. use as a flavouring in food, alcoholic drinks and pickles

The tree is native to arid zone of northern South America and Peru’s Andean deserts.

In Cyprus it’s planted by municipalities along roadsides and in public parks.

As an ornamental evergreen, fast-growing tree it is suited to the Cyprus climate being resistant to drought, high temperatures and frost.
