Description

  • small green-grey bipinnateleaflets also pinnate leaves
  • light-grey stems with small hooked down thorns
  • spikes of small yeallow flowers appear from May to July
  • light yellow to pale brown irregularly spherical pods appear in August

preparation

  1. pick the fruit when it has turned to a light brown, roast, peel and eat, the texture is spongy with a bland taste
  2. the dry pod and seeds can be ground down and used like flour
  3. the flour can be added to water as a drink

extra info

Prosopis farcta is a member of the bean family and a common weed in Cyprus. The tree-like root system can reach down to 20 m below ground with just the upper branches appearing above ground.

It is salt and drought tolerant.

Despite being a weed this species improves the soil by counteracting salinity and maintaining a porous soil by deep rooting and preventing erosion.
