Description

  • A thorny shrub or small tree
  • The leaves are a lighter green on the underside
  • The leaves of Crataegus azarolus are obovateegg-shaped, narrow at base with a crenatewith rounded teeth margin
  • The leaves of Crataegus monogyna are obovateegg-shaped, narrow at base with a lobed toothed margin

preparation

  1. pick young leaves, flower buds and young flowers and add to salads
  2. The flowers can be used to make tea
  3. The fruit of Crataegus azarolus are called ‘Azaroles’ and can be eaten raw but also used for jam, in Cyprus named ‘λαδάπι’ (Ladapi)
  4. The fruit of Crataegus monogyna are called ‘Haws’ and can be used for jams

The two varieties of hawthorn have crossed to produce Crataegus ×sinaica which can be found on Troodos. 

Crataegus azarolus can be found all over Cyprus. Crataegus monogyna can be found on Troodos and the west of the island.
