Description

  • grows in damp places, shaded valleys and near streams and rivers
  • Each leaf is composed of several leaflets, which are arranged in an alternate pattern along the stem. The leaflets are ovate egg-shaped, wide at base or elliptical pointed at both ends in shape and have serrate teeth forward pointing edges.
  • The upper surface of the leaflets is typically dark green, while the underside is lighter in color
  • grows in dense thickets and can reach heights of up to 2 metres
  • Its stems are covered in thorns

Rubus ulmifolius subsp. sanctus, also known as holy bramble,  has a long lifespan, and there is a particular instance of it located in the Chapel of the Burning Bush on Mount Sinai. This specific plant is considered to be the original burning bush mentioned in the Bible, further enhancing its significance both culturally and religiously. Because of this special location and the plant’s endurance, it was given the Latin name ‘sanctus’ meaning ‘holy’.
