Notobasis syriaca has dark green lobed, leaves that grow along the ground. The leaves have charateristic white veins. The leaves on the stem are thin and spiny

Silybum marianum has large grey-green lobed leaves that grow along the ground. The flower heads are larger and less per stem than Notobasis syriaca
