Description

  • grows in damp places, shaded valleys and near streams and rivers
  • glossy odd pinnateleaflets in rows, one at tip leaves, with 4-6 opposite pairs of ovateegg-shaped, narrow at base to lanceolatepointed at both ends, serrateteeth forward-pointing leaflets, slightly paler green on the underside
  • white flowers in umbrella-shaped clusters

preparation

  1. pick tender stems and leaves for salad
  2. steam or boil or add to dishes for a celery flavour

extra info

Apium graveolens the celery we buy in shops used to include Apium nodiflorum in the genus. Helosciadium nodiflorum is the correct taxonomy.

In Greece, the name αγριοσέλινο refers to Smyrnium olusatrum also present in Cyprus.
